This #NativeAmericanHeritageMonth, YWCA Central Maine is honoring the Wabanaki Nations, the “People of the Dawnland,” whose homelands include all of what is now Maine.
The Wabanaki Confederacy includes four nations in Maine: the Penobscot Nation, Passamaquoddy Tribe, Houlton Band of Maliseet Indians, and Mi’kmaq Nation. Here in Lewiston-Auburn, our work happens along the Androscoggin River, on Wabanaki land.
As we fight together for a world where all women and girls can thrive, not just survive, we recognize the Wabanaki women who have led, protected, and sustained their communities for thousands of years. They are culture keepers, language revitalizers, artists, healers, and advocates, and they continue to shape a more just Maine today.
Centering Indigenous women’s perspectives and leadership is central to the YWCA vision that connects YWCA Central Maine to our global mission. This month and every month, we’re committed to listening, learning, and standing in solidarity with Wabanaki communities.
