Today, we recognize and honor the Indigenous peoples of Maine, including the Wabanaki Nations: the Penobscot, Passamaquoddy, Mi’kmaq, and Maliseet (Wolastoqey) peoples, whose history, culture, and enduring presence are deeply connected to this land.

Indigenous Peoples’ Day is an opportunity to celebrate Indigenous resilience, honor traditions and contributions, and acknowledge the history and ongoing challenges faced by Indigenous communities.

At YWCA Central Maine, our mission to eliminate racism and empower women calls us to recognize Indigenous voices, honor diverse histories, and work toward a more equitable and inclusive future for all.
