OUR MISSION

For more than 130 years, the YWCA of Central Maine has been a cornerstone of the community, consistently evolving to meet community need. Today, the YWCA meets the collective needs of 10,000 women, children, seniors and men each year from Androscoggin, Oxford and Franklin counties. YWCA programs promote health and wellness, provide a sense of belonging, and inspire participants to reach their full potential.

It was in 1971 that the YWCA built the only regulation-size pool available in the community on East Avenue in Lewiston, Maine, filling an important need. The YWCA pool became a hub in the area, connecting people of every age and every ability, enhancing the YWCA’s impact on the community it serves. In 1988 programming needs grew and the pool building was greatly expanded to provide new space for growing child care needs as more and more women were going back to work. With a long history of strong leadership the YWCA continues to evolve for the people it serves.
