Fuel the Pool Campaign,
Did you know?
The YWCA has the only indoor Olympic size pool able to be accessed by the community. We offer swimming lessons, therapeutic swims, aquatics school, water fitness classes, and use of the only Magic Y World float in Maine. We host the Twin Cities Swim Team, a summer swim team, and serve as the home swimming pool for three local high school swim teams.
We hope to enhance our already extensive pool-based programming but, to do so, need financial assistance from our community members.
· We need to replace our current Magic Y World float, an overwhelmingly popular activity among our community children.
· We would like to add a climbing wall for the pool area which will enhance Magic Y World and introduce community members of all ages to the joys of climbing.
· To combat the rising costs of heating, we have already begun to make steps to increase the energy efficiency of our entire facility but need to do more. A pool cover is the easiest, most cost effective way to reduce our energy consumption in the pool area.
· To maintain the safety and aesthetics of the pool, the pool tiles need to be re-grouted in 2009.
In order to meet these goals, we are launching a fundraising campaign called Fuel the Pool.
Our Goal: $100,000
Purchase pool cover
$5,000
Offset rising energy costs
$54,000
Purchase new float
$12,000
Purchase climbing wall $12,000
Re-grout pool tiles $17,000
Please help kick-start the Fuel the Pool campaign and ensure continuation of this important community asset.
Just how valuable is the YWCA swimming pool?
·Over 300 children at three area high schools, Edward Little, Lewiston High, and St. Dom’s consider the YWCA their swim team home pool.
·The YMCA and the YWCA work cooperatively to offer a junior swim team opportunity - the Twin City Swim Team – for children who want to learn to swim competitively.
·We provide subsidized aqua-therapy services to physically challenged individuals and the elderly whose health insurance benefits for physical therapy have run out.
·The YWCA Aquatic School certifies approximately 250 lifeguards and water safety instructors (in American Red Cross courses) each year. This program is critical for summer camps wishing to offer water-based programs.
·We provide swim lessons, an essential life skill, to over 500 children annually.
