The YWCA of Central Maine announces new programs for fall 2011
After School/Before School Programs:
Under new direction, the YWCA is offering new and exciting programs for childcare and before and after school care. Newly appointed Executive Director Kathy Durgin-Leighton announced today that beginning this fall, all afterschool care programs will be offered at the YWCA with transportation provided by the Lewiston School Department and Hudson Transportation.
Ms.Durgin-Leighton states, “We are gearing up for a very exciting school year. Our After School program will offer a different activity each day. Monday is arts and crafts day, Tuesday is organized games in the gymnasium which will include ping pong, basketball, bowling, and kickball; Wednesdays are organized board games and card games, Thursday is swim day in the pool, and on Fridays we will offer special activities such as cooking, x country skiing, movies, and some very exciting special events!”
Each day a nutritious snack will be provided as well as homework help.
“It was just a year ago that we announced that we would be closing, but with the wonderful help that we received from the community, we are better than ever. And, as an incentive, if you sign up by August 15, the first week of after school care will be free! If you refer a friend, and that friend signs up as well, you will receive 50% off the second week provided that the referral is to a new customer”, said Ms.Durgin-Leighton. “We are confident that the programs that we offer will be fun, educational, and rewarding!”

Childcare Classes New for the Fall
Child care classes will also look a bit different this year at the YWCA – literally! With a fresh coat of paint in Christopher Robin’s Room, Child care Director Jessica Richard is excited about the upcoming school year. “We will be providing activities and a learning environment that will meet the developmental needs of young children to help them prepare for the years ahead. Individual plans will be prepared for each child with opportunities for parent/teacher conferences. Full day pre-k will be offered and to supplement the Lewiston School System program, we will offer a half day M-Th and full day Friday. Bussing is available only from Montello and Farwell.”

Mar 11, 2011Austin Associates to help the YWCA into the futureLEWISTON — Since the YWCA of Central Maine's near closure last summer, the nonprofit agency has continued to lose money.
The ongoing losses have led the Board of Directors to initiate a top-to-bottom analysis of the 130-year-old institution. Jobs have changed. Hours among the seven full-time staffers have been cut. A new, interim management team has been hired to change the course and in April, a search will begin to find a new executive director.
"I'm just determined to help them turn around," said Steve Austin, an Auburn accountant whose firm, Austin Associates, began working at the YWCA on March 1.
